John Tucker was honored with an
open house Friday afternoon for his 37
years of service to the farmers at the
grain elevator and fertilizer business in
Burr Oak.
Tucker, does not like to think he is
"retiring." "I am not going to quit
working. It just won't be at the eleva-
tor," Tucker said.
Tucker began working for the Jew-
ell County Road Department Monday.
Tucker's long career at Ihe grain eleva-
tor in Burr Oak began shortly after he
graduated from Burr Oak High School.
He began working for Frisbie Con-
struction and it was with this company
that he returned to Burr Oak to rebuild
the elevator at Walker Grain Com-
pany, destroyed by a fire in 1965.
Tucker remembers the day the eleva-
tor owner, Clayton Walker. approached
him and asked him to come and work
for him. Tucker began his career at
Walker Grain in 1966.
"There have been a lot of changes
through the 'years," he said. Tucker
said when he started at Walker Grain
there were seven employees and the
feed business was large and growing.
"We delivered 40 to 60 tons of feed a
day in 1966. Every farmer had live-
stock and there were a lot of hogs on
the farm. There were just a lot more
farmers back then."

Tucker has seen the farms get larger ' of Carlton, Neb.
and the farmers fewer.
In 1967 he managed the facilities of
Walker Grain Company in Otego until
1970. Junior Barnes became manager
of the Otego facility when Tucker was
brought back to the Burr Oak facilities
and managed the fertilizing service. A
new office complex( and scales were
built in 1975. More grain storage was
added since 1975, adding 150 thou-
sand bushels.
The grain trucks have changed
through the years. "In 1966, a lot of the
grain was still being brought into the
elevator in pick-ups. Now the larger
and semi-trucks came in with 500 to
1,000 bushels."
The mode of transporting grain out
of the elevator has changed also. For
